A TASTE OF WHAT’S TO COME

“Dora, what do you mean ‘He’s a wizard’?” Stress coiled around Rorian’s voice.

“I told you not to call me that,” Thegradora growled.

“Don’t dodge the question. We need to know how a Norman can use magic.”

“I don’t think he ever was a Norman.”

“How could you not know that?”

Rorian’s screech grated on Grant’s fraying nerves. He hated when people talked about him like he wasn’t there, but they had a point. Grant could use light magic. That much they had figured out, but what kind of wizard he was remained a mystery. Grant, a wizard. It sounded insane.

“He didn’t know either.” Thegradora whined.

“Don’t you test for that stuff in Lervuco?” Rorian asked.

“Why would we? We’re all Normans.”

“Supposed to be.” Calm rumbled from her curled-up position on the cabin carpet.

“Well, who uses light magic?” Thegradora asked.

“Most O’Fari classes can use light magic to some degree, not to mention the Gietmuri Druids.”

“So, which is it, then?”

“I don’t know, Thegradora! I can’t know without him being tested.”

“Then test him.”

“You don’t even know what that means. He would have to be tested in Aurok.”

“That’s where we’ll go after Tona. Grant needs to know what he is.”

“What if this is all one big coincidence?”

Impossible. A coincidence was when someone you were thinking about crossed your path. It was not when a magic sword activated by light magic fell into a light wizard’s lap—who had no idea they could use it. Something else was at work here. He could only wonder why his parents never told him what he was.

“I doubt it,” Thegradora groaned.

“Well, it had to come from somewhere, didn’t it?”

“Of course it did!”

“Then get out your books and find something.”

Grant could feel his pulse beating against his ears like a drum. Concentration became harder to hold as the beating built.

“I don’t have anything like that with me. Maybe when we arrive at Tona…”

“Tona?” Rorian barked in incredulous anger. “That could be too late. We could all be dead by then!”

“Well, there is a library on board. Perhaps—”

And then Manakel began its screaming again, breaking into their conversation. Rorian, Calm, and Thegradora clapped their hands over their ears. Within seconds, they went to their knees.

The Bloodsabre was propped against the wall only a few feet away, but Grant did not reach for it. After all their arguing about him and who they thought he was, they deserved to suffer. Such immaturity would not simplify the mission. They had to focus on what they had to do, not why. If Grant tried to think on why things were this way, why his family was dead, he would collapse.

Pain finally penetrated Grant’s fog of rage. He rolled to the wall and snatched up the sword. With his mind, he told the sword to stop. The wailing cut off as if placed under glass. The others flopped to the ground, releasing soft grunts of relief. Grant remembered wanting them to suffer and was bewildered at the memory of his anger.

Rorian did not wait to start speaking again.
